Research Axes and Priorities

Thematic Axes

A participatory strategic reflection process enabled the Sleep Network to collectively identify three thematic axes that define the science of sleep, circadian rhythms, and dreams—from fundamental research to clinical, societal, and action research.

Mechanisms and functions

  • Circadian rhythms
  • Homeostatic process
  • Molecular mechanisms
  • Immune system and inflammation
  • Learning, memory and brain plasticity
  • States of consciousness
  • Dreams
  • Emotion regulation

Sleep and circadian disorders

  • Epidemiology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Diagnosis and assessment
  • Treatments
  • Validation of tools
  • Translational research
  • Chronomedicine
  • Patient perspectives

Well-being

  • Cardiovascular health and obesity
  • Healthy aging
  • Academic performances
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Screens, video games and social media
  • Vulnerability
  • Sleep in athletes
  • Adverse environments
  • Road safety

Cross-axis priorities

Our members and partners have identified priorities aimed at building bridges between the thematic axes to accelerate discoveries and maximize their impact. These priorities are: 1) equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), 2) occupational health and safety (OHS), and 3) the development of technological and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. These three priorities draw on expertise from across the three axes and have the potential to drive both scientific and societal innovations within them.

Platforms

The platforms supported and made available to the community to foster an open science approach are: 1) the Canadian Sleep Research Biobank and sleep data repositories, and 2) a platform of sleep data analysis tools.
